Will cannabis come back to haunt Labour?
On May 6th 2010 the population of the UK (that has the vote) will go to the polls to decide who will run the government for the next four years, and for a British cannabis community which numbers between 3 and 7 million people depending on which newspaper you read, the future is bleak. Labour
In the red corner, the current Labour government's stand on cannabis is only too well known. Regardless of the fact 14 of the United States have now legalised cannabis for medical use, or the fact that over 50 million people world wide now have access to a legal supply of cannabis to some degree, the Labour government stubbornly refuses to open a debate on what the legal status of cannabis should be. Indeed rather than trying to reduce the strain on an ailing and antiquated judicial system it would appear Gordon Brown would seek to add to its problems, by classifying cannabis a class B drug back in January 2009. Which brings with it the threat of a 14 year prison term if you're caught dealing. So did the change of law reduce harm? Or reduce the amounts of people experimenting with cannabis? Not if the social networks are anything to go by (which they are), as the amount of cannabis advocating Facebook and twitter members is higher than ever (pardon the pun)! The reality of course, is the politicians know this only too well. Showing the reclassification for what it really is. A mathematical equation which is meant to work out in favour of the judicial system. How much it costs to police versus how much it earns. A 'stealth tax' by any other name, which is used to earn tax revenue from a commodity outside of the legal tax system. And who gives a damn how many of our children are convicted of a "drug offence" for being caught carrying cannabis three times in the same area. At least I think thats how it works although its really hard to say for sure. So a vote for Labour is a vote for a party which has no new ideas on the cannabis issue. Just plenty of old ones. Conservative
To be honest there's no point even mentioning the Conservatives as their primary spin doctor (Paul Dacre at the Daily Mail), won't have anything positive said about cannabis in his newspaper and lets face it, thats where tory policy is cooked up. Which is remarkable when you think the mechanisms cannabis uses to destroy tumours have been called remarkable by at least two practicing American doctors. Or that a British bio-science company called GW Pharmaceuticals, who just happen to be based at a government owned top secret Porton Down facility, is tip-toeing around quietly in the background, attempting to license its cannabis spray treatment for MS (called Sativex), under the protective shroud of prohibition. How does THAT work? How in this instance, can Home Secretary Alan Johnson maintain cannabis has no medicinal use to us? Its an outrage. Which brings us squarely to the third of the so-called 'Big Three'. Liberal Democrats
After the first televised leaders debate, it didn't pass unnoticed that so rattled were Messr's Brown and Cameron, by the calm and reasoned arguments put forwards by Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg, they decided to join forces in trying their best to shoot down the cheeky young upstart, by releasing negative policy stories in their respective newspapers. 'He said this', said Gordon Brown. 'He said that' said David Cameron. But all that has done is stoke Mr Clegg's flames, and especially so amongst a cannabis community which is more 'connected' and in touch with current affairs than ever before. A South Wales man who used cannabis to kick a damaging alcohol habit actually wrote to Nick Clegg's constituency office in Sheffield, to ask for the Lib Dem's standpoint. This is what he received in return; If the Lib Dems are voted into power at the 2010 General Election, they will; * Re-classify cannabis BACK to a Class C drug. * Adopt a policy of not prosecuting possession for own use, social supply to adults or cultivation of cannabis plants for own use. * The Lib Dems will repeal Sections 8 (c) and (d) of the Misuse of Drugs Act so that it is no longer a crime for the occupier or manager of premises to permit someone to use cannabis on those premises. * And they will also Permit medical use of cannabis derivatives, subject to appropriate pharmaceutical controls and the successful conclusion of current clinical trials. So with this in mind, please vote, and whilst you're at it, please choose your vote carefully. Canada: Pot prohibition politely ignored for 420 Day
It was a bit like Guy Lombardo counting down to the New Year. Except instead of the stroke of midnight, it was 4:20 p.m. And instead of popping the cork on bottles of champagne, the reggae musician urged the Victoria Park crowd to "Get your bong ready and spark that (stuff) up!" And then the crowd lit pipes and joints of marijuana. And frankly, it was a lot calmer than any New Year's Eve party I've ever attended. It was all part of 420 Day, an annual counter-culture celebration for marijuana enthusiasts around the world. While more than 1,000 people gathered in Victoria Park for Tuesday's event, larger crowds were expected elsewhere, including a gathering at the Vancouver Art Gallery (at which former Londoner Marc Emery, still awaiting extradition to the U.S. for selling marijuana seeds online, was expected to speak), a 420 film festival in Calgary and a celebration in Niagara Falls at Hwy. 420 and Victoria Ave. "It's just a very peaceful day," said 19-year-old Kalen Charles-Dunne. "You've got people of every kind . . . brought together by something as simple as a plant." Earlier in the day, London Police Const. Amy Phillipo had said police would be monitoring the local event. "People will be held responsible for their actions," she said. "We're not going to be turning a blind eye." But a blind eye was precisely what was turned. At 4:20 p.m., three police officers strolled through the middle of the park while clouds of pot smoke billowed round them. Later, an officer said there'd been "no problems" and no charges had been laid. Welcome to Canada's weird world of wacky tobacky, where pot is mainly illegal (except for some medical exemptions) but where many otherwise law-abiding Canadians have decided it's a law they'll politely ignore. "It's a matter of freedom and civil rights," said a 48-year-old woman who identified herself as Rose Marie. "We don't want to be harassed because we choose weed over booze. As far as I'm concerned, booze causes a lot more problems." Statistics show that about three million Canadians aged 15 or older - or about 12% of the population -- admitted having used cannabis at least once in 2002 (the year for which most recent figures are available). The Canadian Community Health Survey found 1.1% of Canadians used cannabis daily, 3.9% at least once a week and 6% at least once a month. And just last week, an Angus Reid poll revealed 53% of Canadians support the legalization of marijuana. "I don't take Tylenol or Advil, so if I have an ache or pain I'll blaze one," said Kroo Kidd, a 35 year-old environmental science student at UWO. "I can tap into myself better that way." Why 420? The origin of the expression is cloudy. It's been said to correspond to the number of active chemical compounds in marijuana, California police code for a pot bust, the birthdate of Bob Marley, the death of Adolf Hitler and even Bob Dylan's song Rainy Day Women No. 12 and 35, which is commonly known for its refrain, "Everybody must get stoned." (And in case you're wondering, 12 times 35 equals 420.) Recent consensus, however, links 420 (which is now observed every year on the 20th day of the fourth month) to the daily time (4:20 p.m.) that a group of high school students in San Rafael, Calif., routinely gathered to smoke pot during the early 1970s. As the tokers were starting to depart Victoria Park at about 5 p.m., I noticed one young man yelling angrily. He was upset, it turned out, that others had left their litter behind. http://www.lfpress.com/news/london/2010/04/20/13653991.html

Four-year old finds Cannabis in second-hand Xbox 360 game
A four-year old boy has become the latest to find a rather unexpected substance in a second hand copy of an Xbox 360 title. Riley Brown had been particularly excited when his father Andy has purchased him a copy of Fight Night Round 4, reports The Sun newspaper today. However, upon opening the copy he was slightly perplexed as to what the contents of a small 2-inch by 3-inch bag was that had been hidden behind the instruction manual. Andy, a thirty-year old Estate Agent from Littlehampton, West Sussex, said “He’d only been playing the game ten minutes when he came down with the bag in his hand and asked, ‘Daddy, what’s this?’ I checked and realised. I was horrified and took it off him straight away. But what if he’d thought it was sweets, and started munching away? It doesn’t bear thinking about.” It is believed that the bag had contained a small amount of both cannabis and tobacco, presumably left in there by its former owner who had traded the copy in at their local Blockbuster store. However upon complaining to the staff at Littlehampton’s Blockbuster, Andy had been a little annoyed at the response he got. “They didn’t seem too concerned and said they’d credit a free rental to my account,” he remarked. “But this isn’t a matter of a scratched CD or wrong disc, it’s serious. They should check all the boxes before they sell them.” http://www.thelostgamer.com/2010/04/16/four-year-old-finds-cannabis-in-second...

'Hemperor' Jack Herer Passes Away at 70
One of the most prominent figures in the legalization community died today, 70 year-old Oregon resident Jack Herer, author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes and lifelong cannabis activist. California NORML reports and Salem-News.com confirms Herer passed away this morning, after months of serious health complications from a massive heart attack in late 2009. California NORML's Dale Geiringer said Herer was an idealistic, hard-headed pioneer with a voice louder than any P.A. system. "Jack's big contribution was to raise awareness of hemp and the importance of hemp in American agriculture and industry before the mid 20th century. I saw an immediate impact when his book came out around 1990. I had just gotten involved in the marijuana movement and it was the height of the war on drugs. People would just avoid you like the plague. Then when Jack had his book come out, hemp suddenly became an environmental issue." Herer's work in The Emperor Has No Clothes became canon to the new generation of activists. However, his later attempts to change various states' laws through the initiative process met with failure. He tried for years to get hemp initiatives on the different ballots, but they proved too radical for the time. "He kept staying with his initiative and it always had problems. He was asking for a little bit more than the moon," says Gieringer. "It's ironic because he died the year full-scale legalization — I should say half-scale legalization is on the ballot. My recollection is Jack wasn't particularly enthusiastic about it." According to Herer, The Emperor Wears No Clothes has sold 600,000 copies. Herer also had a strain of potent cannabis named after, called Jack Herer. We'll miss you, brother. http://www.eastbayexpress.com/LegalizationNation/archives/2010/04/15/hemperor...

Sting angers anti-drug activists over marijuana campaign
British musician Sting has angered anti-drug groups by adding his name to the campaign to legalise marijuana in America. As politicians in many states, including California, consider legalising pot, celebrities have come out in support of the suggested legislation and Sting wants America to spend the money it uses in the war on the drug, on poverty and environmental issues instead, reported aceshowbiz.com "The war on drugs has failed but it's worse than that. It is actively harming our society. People who genuinely need help can't get it. Neither can people who need medical marijuana to treat terrible diseases,” he said. Sting is calling on fans to support activists at the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) that campaign for those jailed for no violent drug offenses to be released from prison. But his comments have upset anti-drug activists. "Sting should stick to singing and not meddle in matters he doesn't understand. We do not need pop stars coming out and making irresponsible statements like that,” said a spokesperson for DARE, which teaches schoolchildren about the dangers of drug use. http://www.dnaindia.com/entertainment/report_sting-angers-anti-drug-activists...
